Your Holiday Fitness Game Plan: Stay on Track Through New Year's in Hillcrest, San Diego

By Sly · 2026-10-23

Your holiday fitness plan usually goes one of two ways in San Diego. Some people go all in on the parties, skip the gym from Thanksgiving to New Year's, and start January from scratch. Others try to be perfect, white-knuckle every meal, and burn out by the second week of December. Neither one works. What works is a simple plan that bends with your schedule instead of breaking.

At SKfit, our private studio on Fourth Ave in Hillcrest, we help clients get through the holidays every year. The goal isn't to lose 10 pounds in December. It's to walk into January stronger than you were in November, with your routine still running.

Why the Holidays Knock So Many People Off Track

It's rarely one big dinner that does the damage. It's six weeks of small changes stacked together:

Your Holiday Fitness Plan for San Diego

This is the same plan we build with clients in Hillcrest. Keep it simple and protect the basics.
  1. Set a minimum, not a maximum: Pick the fewest workouts you'll do each week, even on your busiest week. For most people that's two. If you get three, great. Two keeps your strength and your habit alive. Not sure what's enough? Read how many personal training sessions a week you actually need.
  2. Book your sessions like appointments: Put them on the calendar before the party invites fill it up. A session you already scheduled is much harder to skip.
  3. Keep your strength training: If you only have time for one thing, lift. Strength work protects your muscle and your metabolism while life gets busy, and the CDC recommends muscle-strengthening work at least two days a week.
  4. Walk after big meals: A 10 to 15 minute walk after a holiday dinner helps your body handle the extra food. Grab family and make it a tradition.
  5. Eat protein first: At parties and family dinners, fill your plate with protein before anything else. You'll feel full sooner and still enjoy the food you came for.
  6. Protect your sleep: You won't hit 8 hours every night. Aim to get back on your normal bedtime the night after a late one.

What to Do When You Miss a Week

You probably will, and that's okay. Travel, a cold or a crazy work week can knock out a whole week of holiday fitness. The mistake is treating one missed week as a lost month. Just get your next session on the calendar and start where you are. One easy workout gets you back in rhythm faster than waiting for a perfect fresh start.

If your back or joints get cranky from extra travel and sitting, our post on training with back pain in Hillcrest covers how we adjust sessions so you keep moving without making it worse.

Why a Coach Makes Your Holiday Fitness Plan Stick

December is when most people quit on their own. Having a coach waiting for you is the difference between "I'll go tomorrow" and actually showing up. With one-on-one training at SKfit, you get:
